The Delta State Police Command has nabbed three women for selling a one-week-old baby in Asaba, Delta State.

The Superintendent of Police and Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, made this known in a video made available to aniomaonline.

In the five-minute video, which paraded the mother of the baby along with the other suspects, Edafe revealed that the mother had given her baby to one of the suspects, who claimed she sold the child for ?3.5 million and gave the mother ?600,000 after the transaction.

However, the buyer (name unknown) claimed that she paid ?4 million for the baby.

He said: “We’ve come to realise that the business of baby factories is on the rise, and we are going to fight it head-on. The other day, we caught three women who were about to transport three babies to Abuja through Asaba International Airport.

“Thank God they were caught and arrested. Today, we have three suspects. One is the mother of a child who is a week and a few days old.

“She gave her child to the woman on the left, and that woman sold the child to the one in the middle for the sum of ?4 million.

“Though she claimed that she collected ?3.5 million, the buyer stated that she bought the baby for ?4 million. However, the woman who sold the baby for ?4 million gave the mother of the baby less than ?600,000.

“When the mother of the baby returned to the people who had been taking care of her during her pregnancy, they realised she was no longer with the child. When asked about the baby’s whereabouts, she confessed that she had sold the baby for ?600,000. She and all those involved in the act were arrested.”

The mother of the baby, 25-year-old Mrs Rachel from Asaba during an interview said she gave the baby away because she was unable to care for two children on her own.

Narrating how she sold the baby, she said: “I have two children, a boy and a girl, including the one I just gave away. I gave birth to the baby on 26th January 2025.

“I gave the baby away because I’m the only one taking care of them, as the father of the child denied me. I supported myself throughout my pregnancy by working in people’s houses, cleaning and doing other chores.

“During that time, I met one Miss Patrick and begged her to help me, as I was not strong enough to care for two babies. So, she sold the baby and gave me ?600,000, then asked me to settle her, leaving me with ?570,000.”

On her side of the story, Mrs Patrick, she said: “I sold the baby for ?3.5 million. I gave the mother of the child ?600,000 and collected the ?30,000 she owed me. The remaining money is in my account.”

The buyer of the baby (name unknown), who is from Ika Local Government, said that although she had informed Mrs Patrick that she wanted to adopt a child legally, she did not sign any document before the baby was handed over to her.
